The Food Community Pillars: Coniglio Brothers Italian Deli

Here at Fiorello’s, we’re all about community. In our new Foodie-rello’s blog series, we’re taking the opportunity to highlight some of our favorite local businesses, and introduce the Fiorello’s eatership to whom we consider the “Best of the Bay Area.” Living in such a culturally rich locale, with no shortage of fantastic fine dining and family-owned markets to source nutritious food, we think it’s only right. This week, we’re taking a road trip down the coast to Coniglio Brothers Italian Deli in Monterey.

Coniglio Brothers is a classic Italian deli focusing on fine cured meats, cheeses, classic sandwiches and charcuterie, imported European grocery items, and a selection of beer, wine, and champagnes.

Founded by Jason Coniglio in February, 2020, the Coniglio Brothers Italian Deli roots actually stretch all the way back to the mid 1950’s. Jason’s father John, and uncle Philly, both ran their own classic delis — each called The Mediterranean Market. Uncle Phil opened his store in Carmel and ran their market until the early 2000’s, when his children retired. In 1968, Jason’s father John opened his sister store in the Del Monte Shopping Center in Monterey, later relocating to Salinas in the late 1980’s, before eventually selling the business.

Fast forward to present times, Jason decided to name today’s rendition of the family business Coniglio Brothers, as an homage to his late father and uncle, while bringing some of their (delicious) Sicilian cuisine and culture to historic Cannery Row.

Besides family tradition, of course, Jason’s inspiration for Coniglio Brothers is bringing a classic deli feel to his community, and sharing his family’s storied history.

Doing business locally is a blessing; helping share our diverse and rich culture to all who visit the Peninsula is the most rewarding part of working in our Deli.

He proudly employs five hard workers, along with some helpful seasonal staff who lend a hand during the busy season. In addition to crafting some of the most delicious Italian deli sandwiches we’ve ever tasted, Coniglios proudly stocks their freezer with Fiorello’s Artisan Gelato (as any proper Italian deli should :). By the way, Jason’s favorite flavors are Tony Spumoni and Stracciatella. Let us know in comments what are yours!

I chose Fiorello’s given the pure quality of the product, and the history behind Fiorello’s; it’s a natural fit to our belief of “History, Heritage, Hospitality". (Which we definitely agree with!)
