The Local Food Community Pillars: Sol Food

Here at Fiorello’s, we’re all about community. That’s why we’re embarking on a new community building blog where we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite local businesses and partners, primarily here in Marin County, and occasionally elsewhere too. Our goal is to bring attention to the good, hardworking folks nearby — who not only support us — but more importantly keep our families fed, and healthy. The Bay Area is a culturally rich locale, with no shortage of fantastic fine dining, and small, family-owned markets to source nutritious food. This ongoing blog series is our opportunity to shine some light on these community pillars, and introduce the Fiorello’s eatership to whom we consider the “Best of the Bay Area.” Our first entry is none other than downtown San Rafael mainstay, Sol Food.

Founded in 2002 by Sol Hernandez, a San Rafael native, Sol Food Puerto Rican Cuisine started in 2003 at the downtown San Rafael Farmers’ Market. Their first brick and mortar location was opened in 2004 on the corner of 4th & Lincoln, and was about 250 square feet. 19 years later, they’ve expanded to two San Rafael locations, one in Mill Valley, and are currently working on a new place in Petaluma which will house eat in, takeout and patio seating all under one roof!

Sol’s delicious, authentic Puerto Rican homestyle dishes are prepared with fresh, high quality ingredients. Some signature items include their baked chicken thigh meal, the steak & avocado sandwich, and their fresh sparkling limeade. They’re also famous for their signature Pique – hot pepper sauce, and Lemon-Garlic salad dressing. Top that off with some Fiorello’s Gelato for dessert and you can’t go wrong!

Sol Food thrives on sharing their food, and culture with the Bay Area community, and proudly employs 240 hardworking individuals. The gorgeous surroundings and familiarity of being born and raised here make Marin County the perfect home for their business. We asked what the most rewarding aspect of working at Sol Food is:

“Seeing long term employees who work their way up and are able to create a successful career with our company. Most of our management staff have started at entry level positions – dishwashers, cashiers.  We are very proud to be able to contribute to their wellbeing in some way.” It’s truly all about community.
